πŸ… Duke of Edinburgh β€” Parent Syllabus

The official DofE framework, the 52-week progressive plan, and exactly which weekend activity maps to which syllabus area.

What is the Duke of Edinburgh Award?

The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award is a globally recognised youth development program founded by HRH Prince Philip in 1956. It runs in 130+ countries, including Australia, where it's delivered by The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award – Australia.

The Award has 3 progressive levels β€” Bronze (14+), Silver (15+), Gold (16+) β€” and 4 mandatory sections (we call them "pillars"). Each kid sets a personal goal in each section and tracks regular activity over weeks/months. Gold-level Award holders enjoy genuine recognition with universities and employers worldwide.

The Fab 5 are currently 12 β€” too young to formally enrol, but we're baking in the habit early so when each kid hits 14 they're already months ahead. Same syllabus, kid-friendly framing.

The 4 Pillars

πŸ’ͺ Physical Recreation

Kid talk: Getting fit & moving your body

Improve in a physical activity β€” sport, dance, fitness, anything that gets your heart pumping.

πŸŽ“ Skills

Kid talk: Learning cool new skills

Develop a personal interest, practical or social skill β€” cooking, music, photography, first aid, navigation, etc.

πŸ’› Voluntary Service

Kid talk: Helping our community

Help people, animals or the environment without being paid β€” beach cleanups, tutoring, helping elderly neighbours.

πŸ”οΈ Adventurous Journey

Kid talk: Outdoor adventures & expeditions

Plan, train for and complete a self-reliant team journey in unfamiliar wild country.

Note for parents: The hours above are official entry minimums. Many kids exceed them naturally β€” the goal isn't ticking boxes, it's building consistent habits in each pillar.

🎯 Coverage β€” Which of Our Planned Activities Build Each Pillar?

This is the reverse view: instead of "what does this activity build?", it asks "for each DofE pillar we need, which activities on OUR calendar cover it β€” and are there gaps?"

Calculations use scheduled events from the calendar compared against the Bronze hour target (13hr per pillar). Anything below 25% = πŸ”΄ gap, 25–49% = 🟑 thin, 50–99% = 🟒 on-track, 100%+ = πŸ† strong.

πŸ“‹ Every Planned Event β€” Tagged with Pillars

Every event on the calendar, tagged with which pillars it builds. Events marked "fun bonus" don't earn DofE credit (and that's OK β€” fun is fun!).

πŸ“… The 52-Week Progressive Plan

Each weekend is mapped to a specific activity + the pillars it builds. The plan progresses Bronze foundation (weeks 1-20) β†’ Silver depth (weeks 21-40) β†’ Gold expedition (weeks 41-52). Each phase ends with an Adventurous Journey milestone: Bronze AJ week 20, Silver AJ week 40, Gold AJ + Residential week 51-52.

🐾 We're currently on Week 1 of 52 β€” the row highlighted below is this weekend.

How to support your kid

  • πŸ“… Show up to the weekend adventures (or wave them off β€” your call).
  • πŸŽ’ Pack the standard day-pack (food, drink, weather-appropriate clothes, sunscreen).
  • πŸ’¬ Ask about it on Sunday night β€” "Which pillar did you build today?" β€” kids LOVE explaining what they learned.
  • πŸ“² Use the kid app with them β€” they have a "My DofE Journey" view that shows their pillar progress in kid language. They can chat with Pebbles (the AI mascot) about each weekend.
  • πŸ† Celebrate AJ milestones β€” week 20 (Bronze AJ), week 40 (Silver AJ), week 52 (Gold AJ). These are the BIG memories.
